Why Packaging Matters: Designing the Dice Tea Experience

Great tea deserves great packaging. Here's the thinking behind the Dice Tea visual identity and why we made every decision we did.

Packaging is the first thing a customer experiences. Before they smell the tea, before they taste it, before they even open the box — they see the package. That first impression matters enormously, and we spent as much time on our packaging as we did on our blends.

The brief was clear: the packaging needed to feel bold, modern, and completely unlike anything else in the tea aisle. Tea packaging has a visual vocabulary — earthy tones, botanical illustrations, serif fonts, lots of gold foil — and we wanted to break every single convention.

The dice concept gave us our visual anchor. Each blend corresponds to a face of a die, and the packaging reflects this: each box features a large, graphic die face as its primary visual element. The dots aren't decorative — they're functional, telling you at a glance which blend you're holding.

Color was our next decision. We chose a dark, almost black background for all six blends — a deliberate departure from the light, natural tones that dominate tea packaging. Against this dark background, each blend's accent color pops with electric intensity. The overall effect is more streetwear than tea shop, which is exactly what we wanted.

Typography follows the same logic. We use bold, condensed display fonts that feel more like a concert poster than a tea tin. The hierarchy is clear: blend name first, flavor notes second, origin third. Everything else is secondary.

Sustainability informed our material choices. Our packaging uses recycled paperboard with water-based inks. The inner seal is compostable. We've eliminated all unnecessary plastic. The packaging looks premium because it is premium — not because it's wasteful.
