The Art of Tea Blending: How We Created Six Perfect Blends
Creating a tea blend that's genuinely great is harder than it looks. Here's what went into developing the six blends that define Dice Tea.
Tea blending is part science, part art, and part obsession. A master blender can identify hundreds of individual teas by taste and smell alone, and can predict with remarkable accuracy how different teas will interact when combined. We were lucky enough to work with some of the best.
The process started with a brief: six blends that each represent a distinct flavor experience, that work equally well hot and cold, that use only natural ingredients, and that are genuinely different from anything else on the market. Simple in concept. Eighteen months in execution.
We started with the base teas. For each blend, we tested dozens of single-origin options before settling on the one that best expressed the character we were after. The base tea isn't just a vehicle for other flavors — it's the foundation that everything else is built on, and getting it right is non-negotiable.
Then came the additions. Natural flavor additions in tea blending fall into three categories: botanicals (flowers, herbs, spices), fruit (dried or freeze-dried), and natural extracts. Each has different characteristics in terms of how they release flavor, how they interact with the base tea, and how they hold up over time.
The hardest part is balance. A tea blend that's too heavily flavored loses the character of the base tea — you might as well be drinking flavored water. A blend that's too subtle doesn't deliver the experience you promised. Finding the exact ratio that lets both the tea and the additions shine is where the real craft lies.
We went through over 200 iterations across the six blends before we were satisfied. Some blends came together quickly — Electric Citrus Green found its formula in about three months. Others were more stubborn — Smoky Oolong Storm took nearly a year to get right. But we didn't compromise. Every blend had to earn its place on the die.
